What makes gossip so pervasive and so powerful? The individuals distributing its behind-the-back poison are deceived into believing others NEED to know what they know. And the individuals listening to the gossip become complicit in the gossiper’s character assassination by listening to it.
You counteract gossip’s poison two ways. First, you refuse to listen to the gossiper’s analysis of the situation or negative assessment of the individual in question, Second, you tell them wait while you go get the person they are speaking about, so they can say whatever they felt was so important to you about them to their face.
